The Disciplines of Sulamir

The magic system. Every discipline is a channel through which Faith flows. Faith is the substrate. The disciplines are its shapes.

Nine channel-shapes exist: four Order forces (Binding, Weight, Current, Unmaking) grounded in the fundamental forces of physics, four Chaos currents (Growing, Knowing, Heart, Dream) grounded in the emergent phenomena of life and consciousness, and the Hollow, which is not a shape of relation at all but a channel that routes faith through the primal Wound. In addition, Faith can be practiced unshaped, directed straight at a target without passing through any channel, which is the discipline of saints, priests, mystics, and the devout of every station.

This is the primary reference for any scene involving practice. When writing, consult the relevant section for lowest/middle/highest manifestations, costs, and boundaries to keep powers internally consistent.

Faith is the deep engine of every practice. A person’s strength in any discipline is proportional to the depth of their faith, and the shape of their discipline is determined by what they have cultivated their faith to do. A Binder whose faith in binding is absolute does work no one else can match. A Binder whose faith is shallow produces thin, unreliable effects no matter how exact their technique. The technique is the channel. The faith is the current. You cannot have one without the other.

This has several important consequences.

Incorrect belief still works. Faith does not require its object to be accurately described, or even to exist. A priest who sincerely prays to a god that does not exist still performs real Faith work, because the substrate is the faith itself and the target is only the handle by which the faith is shaped. The faith-substance is not inert; it lands somewhere. It may accumulate at the closest real target that matches the shape the believer gave it, feeding an existing entity the believer did not know about. It may pool in the cultural meme of the fictional target, slowly making it more real across generations. It may be scattered thinly and effectively wasted. In the most dangerous case, mis-targeted faith may be drawn into the Hollow, which is always listening for unclaimed substrate. The priests of three different gods can all perform real miracles. At most one of their gods may actually exist in the form their worshippers describe. The others are producing real effects through faith landing where the faith-shape points, not where the theology does. This is the mechanism that makes the OCTA’s job so much harder than simple heresy-hunting.

Affinity is the native shape of a person’s faith. In the old framework, some humans were said to be “born with” an affinity for a particular discipline. The clearer reading is that every person’s faith has a native shape, determined partly by temperament and partly by the environment their belief grew up inside. A child raised among Binders watches faith in binding for twenty years and their own faith learns that shape. A person whose temperament runs toward the structural and lawful tends to shape their faith along Order channels. A person whose temperament runs toward the generative and relational tends to shape their faith along Chaos channels. Training is cultivation of a shape. The capacity to hold faith at all is universal; the shape is particular. Hereditary affinities in noble bloodlines are explainable mostly by this inheritance-of-shape through household modeling, though some faint angel-demon lineage may also contribute in specific houses.

Atheists and cynics are rare, and their practice is different. A person who believes deeply in nothing at all cannot practice any channel, because there is no substrate to run through the channel. In practice almost nobody is a complete cynic. Most self-described skeptics believe deeply in something: themselves, their craft, their method, their cause, the dignity of work. Self-faith and craft-faith are legitimate shapes, and the world is full of people unconsciously practicing one or the other. A scientist who truly believes in the method produces Knowing-adjacent results without recognizing them. A craftsman who truly believes in their hands produces Binding-adjacent results. Sulamir is full of unidentified practitioners because commitment is not rare, only sharp commitment focused enough to produce recognizable effects.

The discipline shapes are anchored in the cosmological layer. The nine channels exist because the angels and demons, and behind them the Source and the Companion, hold the archetypes the channels match. A human Binder is shaping their faith to match an Order archetype that the angels of binding hold in place. If every angel of binding vanished, Binding as a practice would become harder to find; practitioners would have to reach deeper and find the shape themselves in the cosmology. The disciplines are learnable because their shapes are maintained. This is why the Founding age was magically richer (the archetypes were closer and more accessible) and why the current era is thinner (the angels and demons have withdrawn, and the shapes are farther).

The nine channel-shapes arrange along a metaphysical spectrum from white (Order) to black (Chaos). Color-coding is a real convention inside Sulamir, used on guild regalia, academy insignia, ceremonial robes, and practitioner identification. A practitioner’s eyes flash the color of whatever channel they are running faith through in the moment, which makes discipline usage visibly legible in every scene. Focus stones (see section below and 10-TECHNOLOGY) carry the color physically and at higher visibility.

  • White end (Order): the four fundamental forces of physics as faith-shapes. Law-bound, deterministic. The bones of reality as the Source holds them.
  • Black end (Chaos): the four emergent currents of life and mind as faith-shapes. Non-reducible, generative. The life of reality as the Companion holds it.
  • Center (bridging): unshaped Faith directed at a target across the mortal-cosmological gap. The only practice that is pure substrate with no channel.
  • Outside the spectrum: the Hollow. A channel that routes faith through the Wound rather than through any relational archetype, and widens the Wound with every use.

The Structure of the Spectrum: Two Ordering Variables and the Cross-Divide Pairs

Section titled “The Structure of the Spectrum: Two Ordering Variables and the Cross-Divide Pairs”

The two halves of the spectrum are ordered, and they are not ordered by the same law. This asymmetry is the structure, not a flaw in it.

The Order half is ordered by scale of physical interaction, the energy at which each force acts. The four fundamental forces run from the nuclear through the electromagnetic to the gravitational, with the electroweak unification joining electromagnetism to the weak force and the strong force joining only at grand-unification energy, and gravity refusing to unify with any of it.

The Chaos half is ordered by degree of individuation, how bounded and personal each emergent phenomenon is. Matter organizes into life, life into mind, mind into its two faces of cognition and affect, and beneath all selves lies the shared substrate they draw from. The Growing is a whole bounded body. The Knowing is a mind’s discrete and owned facts. The Heart is a self reaching outward. The Dream is what lies beneath all selves, barely bounded at all.

Each ordering variable throws exactly one current off its own axis. On the Order side it is gravity, the weakest force, which will not unify with the others. On the Chaos side it is the Dream, the least individuated current, which will not sit cleanly on the white-to-black spectrum. The bible names the Dream off-axis for this reason.

The disciplines pair across the divide by function, not by borrowed physics:

Order (ordered by energy scale)Chaos (ordered by individuation)Shared function
The BindingThe KnowingImpose structure and pattern; the whitest of each half
The WeightThe GrowingThe foundational leaners, the base layer each half is built on
The CurrentThe HeartThe versatile mass-reachers, able to move a crowd or a district
The UnmakingThe DreamThe deep, costly, identity-transmuting current of each half

The last pair is the load-bearing one. The Knowing and the Dream are the conscious and the unconscious faces of a single faculty, the mind. The Knowing coheres perception into pattern, the way the strong nuclear force coheres matter while preserving its identity. The Dream transmutes the self into shared myth, the way the weak nuclear force transmutes one particle into another. They mirror the strong and the weak forces not by claiming their physics, which belongs to the Binding and the Unmaking, but by echoing the same relationship on the side of mind. The cohere-and-transmute axis runs through both halves of the spectrum.

There is a true physical referent for the Dream being off-axis. The weak nuclear force is the only one of the four fundamental forces known to violate parity, mirror symmetry, proven in the beta-decay experiments. It is literally the force that does not sit evenly on the axis the others share. The Dream borders the Knowing without being its twin, exactly as the parity-violating weak force stands beside the strong.

A note on symmetry, stated honestly. The system is symmetric in form, four and four, and mirrored in function across the pairs above. It is not symmetric in every property. The honest exception is this: the borders with the Hollow cluster on the Chaos side. Only the Dream borders the Hollow by architecture, because the Hollow is the absence of relation, and only the relational channels can fail toward it. No Order channel borders the Wound at all; Order fails in the body, never toward the tear. The Dream borders the Hollow not because it is corrupt but because it is the last integrated thing standing beside the place where integration ends.

The four functional pairs are also the four god-pairs of the pantheon: each God is a Zar’ir, one Order-god bonded to one Chaos-god across a shared axis. Zathra is the Weight-god. See 07-RELIGIONS and COUNCIL/cosmogony-pantheon-council.md.

Full council reasoning that established the spectrum structure: COUNCIL/dream-council.md.

Full canonical colors. The color is what a practitioner’s eyes flash and what their focus stone takes on when they channel the discipline. The palette is organized on a cosmological principle: Order channels emit (their colors read as lit from within, the additive palette of light), Chaos channels absorb (their colors read as saturated pigment, the subtractive palette of ink and dye). The full treatment is in the Visual Grammar subsection below.

ChannelColorNotes
All four Order at oncewhiteReserved for the archon of Order. The additive sum of all emitted light. A clear stone that goes perfectly white is an archonic signature.
The BindingyellowSunlight, lawgiver-gold, the structural radiance of the crown.
The WeightblueSky-depth, sapphire glow, the blue of falling gravity.
The CurrentcyanElectric arc, plasma, the ozone-edge of lightning.
The UnmakingorangeIncandescent fire, rust-glow, the warm light of dissolution.
All four Chaos at onceblackReserved for the archon of Chaos. The subtractive sum of all pigment, called the Key in the old color registers and in print. A stone that goes absolute black is an archonic signature.
The GrowinggreenChlorophyll, plant-ink, the stain of living leaf.
The KnowingmagentaTyrian purple, ink-saturated, the dye of mind and mystery.
The HeartredBlood, cochineal, the deep dye of felt life.
The DreamindigoLiteral indigo dye, the oldest pigment of the night and the threshold between waking and sleep.
Unshaped FaithgoldLustrous metallic gold, the color of the substrate itself before it takes light or pigment. Saint’s halo, direct cosmological bridge. Distinct from Binding’s flat sun-yellow by its luster.
The HollowvoidedNeither emitted nor pigmented. An absence of medium. A stone running the Hollow becomes a hole in the visual field that drinks both light and ink. Visually unmistakable and always forbidden.

Visual Grammar: Order Emits, Chaos Absorbs

Section titled “Visual Grammar: Order Emits, Chaos Absorbs”

The color wheel is not arbitrary. It encodes a cosmological distinction that runs through every layer of Sulamir’s aesthetic canon and should be honored by every artist, colorist, and designer working in the world.

Order is additive. Every Order channel uses a color from the additive (light-emitting) palette. When an Order practitioner channels, their eye-flash glows; the color seems lit from within rather than painted onto the iris. Their focus stone looks emissive, like a plasma bulb, a lit neon tube, a fiber-optic filament. In illustration, Order channels receive bloom, holographic sheen, iridescence, and light-spill. In animation, Order effects are rendered as self-illuminated layers. The archon of Order expresses all four Order channels at once as pure white, the additive sum of all emitted light, which is why Oen at full expression radiates rather than shines.

Chaos is subtractive. Every Chaos channel uses a color from the subtractive (pigment-based) palette. When a Chaos practitioner channels, their eye-flash saturates; the color seems inked into the iris, deep and matte rather than glowing. Their focus stone looks pigment-rich, like dyed resin, painted glass, stained crystal. In illustration, Chaos channels receive deep saturation, velvety finish, and no bloom. In animation, Chaos effects are rendered as opaque overlays. The archon of Chaos expresses all four Chaos channels at once as pure black, the subtractive sum of all pigment, which in classical color theory is called the Key. Cyl at full expression is the Key: the absorbing center, the ink that cancels everything else.

The substrate and the forbidden sit outside both. Unshaped Faith is gold, the ur-color that exists before light and pigment are differentiated, rendered as luminous metallic luster. A gold focus stone reads as the color of the substrate itself. The Hollow is voided, neither emitted nor absorbed but absent of medium entirely, rendered as a hole in the image that drinks both light and ink.

Practical consequences. Across adaptations this distinction is load-bearing. A reader, viewer, or convention-floor stranger should be able to tell Order practice from Chaos practice at a glance, without needing to know which channel is active. Production pipelines fork along this line: Order costuming uses foil, holographic vinyl, iridescent fabric, glow-in-the-dark, emissive materials generally; Chaos costuming uses deep-dyed cotton, pigment-rich screen printing, matte finishes, hand-dyed accents. Merchandising, print materials, and motion graphics follow the same rule. Two halves of one aesthetic universe, two entirely different production languages, both immediately recognizable.

Every act of practice costs faith paid from the practitioner’s self. What differs between channels is the currency the cost is paid in, determined by which channel the faith runs through.

  • Order channels (Binding, Weight, Current, Unmaking): cost paid in body. Energy, heat, nerve, skeletal and tissue wear. The practitioner’s flesh is the conduit through which structural faith-shapes pour, and the flesh pays for the pour.
  • Chaos channels (Growing, Knowing, Heart, Dream): cost paid in self. Vitality, memory of what is loved, emotional range, boundaries of identity. The practitioner’s interior life is the conduit through which generative faith-shapes pour, and the interior pays for the pour.
  • Unshaped Faith: cost paid in self-transferred-outward. Pieces of the practitioner flow through the bridge to the target, where they accumulate and make the target more real, more present, more able. The practitioner grows less their own.
  • The Hollow: cost externalized. Hollow practice routes faith through the Wound itself, which has no relational integrity to pay the cost against. The cost is paid by reality rather than by the practitioner. This is why Hollow users feel fine for decades while the world around them grows subtly worse.

The practitioner’s strength in any channel is proportional to the depth of their faith. Two Binders of equal training and equal flesh produce different results if their faith differs. The strongest Binder in the world is the one whose faith in binding is the most absolute. The weakest Binder is the one who knows the technique perfectly but cannot quite believe in it.

Energetic orientation. The cost split tracks the masculine-feminine axis of the cosmology (see 01-COSMOLOGY.md section 2). Order channels carry the outward, exteriorizing, projecting orientation of Source-nature: they push the faith through the body into the world and the body pays. Chaos channels carry the inward, interiorizing, enfolding orientation of Companion-nature: they pull the faith through the interior of the self and the interior pays. The division is not gendered. Practitioners of any sex run either side of the spectrum, and most citizens run a little of both across the course of a day. At discipline-level the terms Order and Chaos are sufficient; at Temple-of-the-One contemplative-level the terms outward-shaping and inward-holding (or, in the oldest register, Sul-work and Am-work) are sometimes used for the same distinction.

  • Most people have ordinary, diffuse faith and do not produce recognizable discipline effects, though almost all of them are weakly channeling something whenever they are deeply committed to anything.
  • True practitioners, meaning those whose faith is focused and shaped enough to produce middle-tier manifestations reliably, are perhaps one in several thousand citizens.
  • High practitioners, whose faith has been refined to produce the highest-tier manifestations with control, are legendary. Perhaps dozens across the entire city at any given time.
  • Most practitioners have one native shape. A few have two. Anyone with three or more is a historical figure.
  • Shapes that cross the Order-Chaos divide (a physical channel plus an emergent current) are particularly rare and often prophesied about, because they require a faith supple enough to hold two opposed archetypes.
  • Cyl and Oen, as archons, have full access to their entire half of the spectrum natively. Their faith does not need to be shaped toward Chaos or Order archetypes; they are those archetypes in mortal form. This is categorically different from human practice. Unshaped Faith and the Hollow are available to them but particularly dangerous, because a being who is already a cosmological position can reshape the target of any Faith they exercise at archonic scale.

The disciplines are the native tools of the angels and demons, and behind them of the Source and the Companion. Humans practice them at a cost precisely because humans are not the original wielders. The archetypes are held by the cosmological layer, and mortal faith reaches up to match those archetypes. See 01-COSMOLOGY.md section 5.

Every serious practitioner carries or wears a focus stone. See 10-TECHNOLOGY section 12 for the full canon. Short summary: the stones are transparent crystals when inert and take on the color of whatever channel the bearer is running at the moment. Mixing channels muddies the color. Archonic stones go pure white (all Order at once) or pure black (all Chaos at once). A stone running the Hollow goes voided, a hole in the visual field. A stone running unshaped Faith goes gold. Focus stones amplify practice and make it visible. They are the primary prop of the series.

How a person becomes a practitioner. The Framework section above establishes what the disciplines are (channels through which Faith flows). This section establishes how a person actually does the work: the discovery of native shape, the somatic and emotional components, the role of the focus stone, the path from accidental first effects to high-tier proficiency, and the academy and lineage traditions that hand the disciplines down.

The bible’s eight practiceable disciplines (four Order, four Chaos; the Hollow is forbidden and unshaped Faith is direct-substrate-practice rather than channeled) all rest on the same foundation. What differs across them is the specific somatic and emotional register, the typical training tradition, and the available specializations.

A. The Foundation: Faith Is the Substrate, Not a Skill

Section titled “A. The Foundation: Faith Is the Substrate, Not a Skill”

Practice begins with Faith and not with technique. A practitioner whose faith is shallow can master perfect technique and produce thin, unreliable effects. A practitioner whose faith is absolute, even at the lowest manifestation, produces work no shallower practitioner can match. The technique is the channel. The faith is the current. You cannot have one without the other, but the depth of the faith sets the ceiling of the practice.

This is structurally critical for the bible’s magic register: there are no spells in the Harry Potter sense, no incantations that do the magic. There is a substrate that runs through a channel under focused belief. The channel is shaped by training. The belief is deepened by the lived life of the practitioner.

Foundational practice across all eight disciplines therefore begins with the cultivation of faith itself, not with the discipline-specific technique. Apprentices spend their first year doing the same exercises regardless of which discipline they will eventually channel: breath, attention, quietness, the cultivation of a single point of inward focus that can hold without wavering. This is the inward preparation (the Am-work in oldest-register Founding-Tongue, see 09-CULTURE section 5.5). Without it, no discipline takes shape reliably.

Every act of practice runs five components together. The components are universal across the disciplines; what varies is which component is most emphasized and how it is performed.

  1. Faith. The substrate. Depth of belief. Built across a lifetime, not summoned for the moment.

  2. Channel-shape. The form the faith takes when it leaves the practitioner. Each of the eight disciplines is a different channel-shape. A practitioner’s native shape (locked in the Framework section above) is the shape their faith most naturally takes; training refines it.

  3. Focus. The mental and somatic act of bringing faith into the channel in the present moment. Includes breath, posture, attention, and the discipline-specific somatic practice the tradition teaches.

  4. Stone. The focus stone amplifies and stabilizes the channel and renders the practice visible (color, in the case of operational stones; voided in the case of the Hollow; gold for unshaped Faith). Most practitioners cannot work reliably without a stone at the apprentice and journeyman levels. Masters can work without one but typically keep one on their person regardless.

  5. Intent. What the practitioner is trying to accomplish. The clearer and more specific the intent, the more focused the working. Vague intent produces vague effect or no effect.

The five run together in the act of practice. A practitioner does not consciously cycle through them; with training they become a single integrated motion. The first years of training are the slow stitching of the five into one.

C. The Practice Sequence (Operational Model)

Section titled “C. The Practice Sequence (Operational Model)”

A practitioner doing a discipline working will move through a roughly consistent sequence, varying by tradition. The canonical sequence for apprentice-to-journeyman work:

  1. Inward turn. The practitioner brings attention to the inward register (the Am orientation). A trained practitioner can do this in a breath; an apprentice may take a moment. This is the foundational practice from year one.

  2. Stone in hand. The practitioner touches or holds the focus stone. Some traditions teach holding it against the chest, the brow, or the palm. Some practitioners wear theirs and only touch it through cloth at the moment of working.

  3. Naming the channel. Silent in most traditions, sometimes voiced in the Founding Tongue’s oldest register. The practitioner names the channel mentally and aligns their faith to its shape. Sul and Am may be invoked for outward and inward orientation. Most modern traditions are silent.

  4. Breath cadence. Each discipline has a characteristic breath. Binding breath is slow and structural. Weight breath is heavy and grounded. Current breath is quick and electric. Unmaking breath is held and released. Growing breath is paced with the body being worked on. Knowing breath is shallow and attentive. Heart breath is full and embodied. Dream breath is slow and almost lost. The breath is one of the most teachable somatic markers.

  5. Posture and gesture. Discipline-specific somatic register. Per discipline below.

  6. Intent named. Mental clarity on what the working is for. Strong practitioners can hold compound intents; apprentices work one operation at a time.

  7. Channel runs. The faith moves through the named shape toward the intent. Stone takes on color. Eye-flash registers. Effect manifests.

  8. Cost paid. The currency varies by channel (02-DISCIPLINES Framework Cost Principle): Order channels pay in body; Chaos channels pay in self; unshaped Faith transfers the self outward. Apprentices typically experience cost as exhaustion or mild somatic disturbance; masters’ costs are subtler and accumulate.

  9. Return. The practitioner brings the channel down, releases the stone (or stops touching it), and returns to ordinary attention. A working that does not properly close can leave the practitioner running the channel unconsciously for hours afterward, which is one of the failure modes the academies train against.

D. Discipline-Specific Somatic and Emotional Registers

Section titled “D. Discipline-Specific Somatic and Emotional Registers”

Each of the eight disciplines has its own register for steps 4 through 7 above. Brief signatures here; full operational detail per discipline entry.

Binding (Order, yellow). Somatic: hands-on contact whenever possible. Mental: visualization of the underlying structure of what is being bound. Emotional: calm, patient, deliberate. Posture: grounded, often kneeling for stone-work. Voice: silent or low-murmured structural names. Apprentice signature: the practitioner places their palms flat on the surface and breathes slowly until the structure feels right under their hands.

Weight (Order, blue). Somatic: whole-body. Practitioners often lean, shift, or center themselves bodily. Mental: feeling the mass of objects in the room as if their own weight extended outward. Emotional: still, gravitational, often somber. Posture: low center of gravity. Apprentice signature: the practitioner stands very still and feels the room settle around them.

Current (Order, cyan). Somatic: finger and hand movements, sometimes whole-body. Mental: tracking energy flows. Emotional: alert, sometimes joyful, electric. Posture: upright and ready. Apprentice signature: the practitioner’s hair tends to stand when they concentrate, and metal cutlery bends subtly in their presence.

Unmaking (Order, orange). Somatic: careful, controlled gestures, often slow. Mental: intuitive sense of molecular structure and decay-pathway. Emotional: careful, often somber, weighted by what the practice costs. Posture: still, contained. Apprentice signature: objects subtly change wherever they have spent time.

Growing (Chaos, green). Somatic: contact with the living thing being worked on. Mental: sensing biological rhythm, breath, blood. Emotional: nurturing, patient, sometimes fierce. Posture: close to the body, often kneeling beside the patient. Apprentice signature: cut flowers last longer in rooms they sit in.

Knowing (Chaos, magenta). Somatic: eye contact, sometimes hand-on-head for direct working. Mental: direct cognitive engagement with the target. Emotional: composed, attentive, often unsmiling. Posture: upright, witnessing. Apprentice signature: the practitioner remembers small details others forget, and they are never lost. Thoughtplayers (section 6 below) have additional specialization-specific somatic and mental practice.

Heart (Chaos, red). Somatic: voice, embodied gesture, full-body presence. Mental: empathic engagement with the target. Emotional: the working IS emotional; the practitioner cannot do Heart-discipline without bringing real feeling. Posture: present, embodied, often within reach. Apprentice signature: rooms feel warmer or cooler than the practitioner entered them.

Dream (Chaos, indigo). Somatic: stillness, often closed eyes, sometimes ritual movement. Mental: released from waking attention, allowed to drift toward symbol and myth. Emotional: dreamlike, often sad or longing. Posture: reclining or seated, sometimes lying down for deep work. Apprentice signature: vivid precognitive dreams; recurring images that prove accurate.

Most practitioners discover their native shape in adolescence (~10 to 15 Merretian years; ~5 to 7 Earth-equivalent).

The academy system. Children of the upper classes and of senior craft families are tested at a discipline-academy at adolescence. The test involves a sequence of small operations under a master’s guidance, with a clear focus stone placed in the child’s hand. Children whose faith is shaped enough to register produce a faint color in the stone; that color indicates the native shape, and the child is admitted to the corresponding discipline-academy track. Children whose faith does not register stay at the family or trade-lodge level.

The discipline-academy gate. Most discipline academies are gated by great-house sponsorship (04B-CLASS-AND-CONTROL section 3.11). A commoner with native faith-shape cannot easily access training. The system selects the upper-class native shapes into the discipline-practitioner class and leaves the commoner native shapes unsponsored. This is one of the load-bearing mechanisms of social control.

Accidental discovery. Outside the academy gate, native shape is sometimes discovered by accident. The Worker who heals a wound for the first time without knowing what they did. The clerk who can suddenly find lost objects no one else can find. The grieving widow whose voice carries weight beyond what voice should carry. These uncontrolled discoveries are what the OCTA flags as suspicious. Most accidentally-discovered practitioners are either absorbed into a guild’s covert intake or pursued by the OCTA. A small number stay hidden (Otger’s case; the Cyl-mother-side thoughtplayer lineage’s pre-academy generations; the rare commoner who develops the practice and tells no one).

Family-private lineages. Some disciplines run in family-private register, hidden from the academies. The thoughtplayer specialization of the Knowing is the canonical case (02-DISCIPLINES section 6, thoughtplayer entry). These lineages train children at home, usually mother-to-daughter or grandparent-to-child, and the children never enter the academy system. The discipline survives in secret. The OCTA would flag and likely execute these practitioners if discovered.

Self-discovery. A small number of practitioners discover their shape through their own attention. A reader who notices that they always know what a book will say before it says it (early Knowing). A musician who notices that the room changes when they sing (early Heart). A child who notices that flowers last longer near them (early Growing). Self-discovered practitioners typically come to a master or a guild eventually. Some find their way to outlawed lineages.

Once a native shape is identified, training begins. The bible’s three-tier framework (lowest, middle, highest manifestation) maps to apprentice, journeyman, and master in the academy register.

Apprentice (years 1-10 Merretian, ~5 Earth years). Foundational faith-cultivation work in year one. Discipline-specific somatic and emotional training from year two onward. Lowest manifestation operations under master supervision. Failed workings (which are most workings, at this stage) are part of the curriculum. Cost is paid as exhaustion. Apprentices wear distinctive band-of-color on the wrist or sleeve indicating their channel.

Journeyman (years 10-20 Merretian, ~5 Earth years). Middle manifestation operations. Independent work under loose supervision. Specialization choice within the discipline typically happens here. Journeymen begin teaching foundational work to incoming apprentices. Cost begins to shift toward the channel’s currency (body for Order, self for Chaos). Journeymen are recognized practitioners in the public register: a Mason-journeyman of the Binding can take work; a Bavit-vita-journeyman of the Heart can run a healing-house clinic; a Knowing-journeyman of the academies can be hired for memory-work.

Master (years 20+ Merretian, ~10+ Earth years). Highest manifestation operations, rare and costly. Specialization mastery. Most masters teach. Senior masters become guild Leaders, academy directors, or Council figures depending on the discipline. Cost in the channel’s currency is now substantial and life-shaping. An old Mason-master of the Binding may have damaged hands and joints from years of stone-work at the nuclear-level edge. An old Knowing-master of the academies may have lost the memory of loved ones from years of working memory-cost.

Across the eight disciplines, master-level practitioners are rare. Per the Framework’s Practitioner Patterns: middle-tier practitioners (journeymen) are perhaps one in several thousand citizens. Master-tier practitioners (highest manifestation reliably) are legendary; perhaps dozens across the entire city at any given time. The discipline-academies graduate hundreds of apprentices per generation; most never reach mastery, either because their faith is not deep enough, or because the cost catches them before they reach the master level.

G. Mentorship and the Master-Apprentice Relationship

Section titled “G. Mentorship and the Master-Apprentice Relationship”

Practice transmits primarily through master-apprentice mentorship rather than through book or curriculum. The bible’s academies have curricula and texts, but the actual learning happens at the master’s side. The master demonstrates a working. The apprentice attempts. The master corrects. The apprentice attempts again. Across thousands of small operations the apprentice’s faith learns the shape, body learns the somatic, attention learns the focus, and intent learns the precision.

The relationship is intimate at the discipline-deep level. A master and apprentice may work together for ten or fifteen Merretian years before the apprentice is allowed to work alone. The trust runs deep; betrayals of the master-apprentice relationship are among the most serious within any guild’s internal code.

Outlawed lineages (thoughtplayer, the rare uncontrolled commoner) run the same master-apprentice register without the institutional cover. The intimacy is the same; the danger is higher.

Each of the eight disciplines admits multiple specializations. The bible has already locked thoughtplayer as the canonical Knowing specialization. Other specializations follow the same pattern: a sub-tradition within the discipline that focuses on specific applications, has its own master-apprentice lineage, and is recognized within the discipline’s academy as a distinct training track.

Working canon for the eight disciplines’ specializations (representative, not exhaustive):

  • Binding. Armorsmith (military), surgeon (medical), structural reinforcer (Mason construction), nuclear-Binder (rare, dangerous, near-mastery level).
  • Weight. Levitator, crusher (martial), well-worker (singularity-level, mastery), light-bender (highest manifestation).
  • Current. Lightning-thrower, illusionist, chemistry-worker, plasma-shaper, signal-worker (Cloud-network maintenance).
  • Unmaking. Transmuter (alchemy), radiation-worker (medical and military), bioweapon-crafter (forbidden in most provinces).
  • Growing. Healer, agriculturist, vitalist (life-extension; the practice Lady Summer adjacently runs), reshaper (rare, near-mastery).
  • Knowing. Lore-master, thoughtplayer, truth-reader, archivist (memory-work for the institutions).
  • Heart. Charismatic (politicians, commanders), oath-binder (covenant work, includes soul-pact officiation), grief-worker (mourning rites), demagogue (rare and dangerous).
  • Dream. Dreamwalker, prophet, mythmaker, gate-worker (the rare practitioner who can move between dream and waking).

Each specialization has its own academy track within the discipline, its own master-apprentice lineage, and its own cost register. A thoughtplayer of the Knowing pays the standard Knowing cost (memory of what is loved) at a higher rate than a lore-master of the Knowing, because the specialization works the discipline harder.

Every practitioner learns, alongside their primary discipline, the practice of cost management. Knowing how hard to work, when to stop, how to pace across a working session, how to recover, how to read the warning signs of overwork. This is a meta-discipline taught in every academy and every outlawed lineage.

Cost-management is itself one of the marks of a mature practitioner. Apprentices commonly overwork themselves and pay catastrophic costs (an apprentice Binder who pushes too hard can damage their bones; an apprentice Knowing-practitioner who pushes too hard can lose years of memory in a session). Journeymen learn the limits. Masters operate at the edge of the limits without crossing them.

The Heart-discipline tradition (Bavit-vita) is the senior cost-management tradition because the Heart-discipline cost (emotional range) is the most insidious; a Heart-practitioner can lose their capacity for authentic feeling before they realize what they have spent. Bavit-vita teaches cost-management as a foundational practice for all eight disciplines, not just Heart, and the senior Bavit-vita figures often serve as cross-discipline advisors at the academy level.

Not all practitioners progress cleanly. Common failure modes:

The shallow faith. A practitioner whose faith never deepens stays at the apprentice level forever. They produce small effects unreliably. Most stop practicing within a few years.

The over-cost. A practitioner who pushes the channel’s cost too hard pays the cost in a way that cripples them. The damaged Binder. The memory-burned Knowing-practitioner. The flattened Heart-practitioner who cannot feel anything authentic.

The wrong shape. A practitioner whose native shape was misidentified at the academy test. Some have a different shape that the test missed; some have a shape that does not match any standard channel. These practitioners struggle through years of training before either finding their actual shape or abandoning the practice.

The Hollow drift. A practitioner whose discipline edges toward the Hollow without their full awareness. The Dream-practitioner who walks too close to the Wound. The Knowing-practitioner who routes through the Hollow for unauthorized information access. The Heart-practitioner who breaks too many oaths and finds their work pooling in the Wound’s vicinity. The OCTA watches for this.

The OCTA’s response. Per 07-RELIGIONS section 5, the OCTA has independent legal authority to capture and destroy practitioners who appear to be doing Hollow work. Most flagged practitioners are not in fact Hollow workers; they are uncontrolled, mis-trained, or running family-private lineages. The OCTA does not always distinguish. The system selects for academy-trained, guild-sponsored, institutionally-aligned practice and discards everything else.

The bible’s ninth practice, unshaped Faith (section 9 below), is taught differently from the eight channeled disciplines. It is taught primarily in religious tradition: by the Temple of the One, by the mainstream pantheon’s eight temples, and by the various devotional cells across the continent. The unshaped-Faith practitioner does not channel their faith into a discipline-shape; they direct it as substrate toward a target.

The mechanics of unshaped-Faith practice are different from the channeled disciplines. The focus stone goes gold rather than colored. The cost is paid in self transferred to the target. The training is contemplative rather than craft-oriented. The Temple of the One’s inner teaching (07-RELIGIONS section 2) is one of the most senior unshaped-Faith traditions; Niska’s training is in this register.

A small number of practitioners run both a channeled discipline and unshaped-Faith practice. They are rare and typically priestly-tier figures. Most practitioners specialize in one or the other.

The Hollow has no academy. There is no master-apprentice lineage for it. Hollow workers come to the practice through accidental discovery, through Hollow-cult recruitment, or through the Dream-discipline’s borderlands. The OCTA hunts all known Hollow practitioners. The discipline survives because the Hollow itself attracts the unclaimed faith of the continent’s bad theology, and a new Hollow worker is produced occasionally as a matter of cosmological pressure rather than as a matter of training (section 10 below).

For a child who has been identified as having native shape at adolescence and admitted to an academy:

  • Year 1: Foundational faith-cultivation. Breath, attention, inwardness. No discipline-specific training yet.
  • Years 2-5: Apprentice work in the identified discipline. Lowest manifestation operations under master supervision. Discipline-specific somatic and emotional training.
  • Years 5-10: Late-apprentice work. Specialization choice typically happens in this window.
  • Years 10-20: Journeyman. Middle manifestation. Independent work. Begin teaching foundational work to new apprentices.
  • Years 20+: Master. Highest manifestation operations rarely. Specialization mastery. Teaching. Possible academy or guild leadership.

For an uncontrolled commoner who discovers native shape by accident: the path is improvised, often dangerous, sometimes ends at the OCTA’s hands. The few who make it to mature practice without institutional sponsorship are exceptional, including the rare cases the band of book one carries (Otger as a self-taught uncontrolled commoner Heart-practitioner; Cyl as a family-private thoughtplayer lineage member; Oen with his Order-perception that has not yet been named to him).

The bones of reality. Physical, deterministic, predictable. Colors are drawn from the additive (light-emitting) palette and sum to white. Yellow for Binding, blue for Weight, cyan for Current, orange for Unmaking. Order practice glows rather than stains.

The strong nuclear force. Binds quarks into protons and neutrons; holds atomic nuclei together; the strongest force at its scale of action.

Whitest of the Order forces. The purest expression of structural unity.

Making two objects adhere without adhesive. Mending hairline cracks. Sealing wounds by coaxing tissue to re-knit. Joining metal edges briefly. A Binder’s handshake is unusually firm, and closed doors seem reluctant to open.

Structural reinforcement: a wall, a weapon, a body rendered practically unbreakable for a sustained period. Knitting broken bone. Fusing stone. Welding without heat. Creating armor that refuses to fail. Locking a room so that all its components hold as a single object.

Transmutation of matter at the level of what binds to what. Rearranging the structural identity of materials to produce alloys and isotopes impossible in nature. At the extreme edge, forging new stable matter from unstable or rare substrates. Binding things that should not be bound: light, sound, a concept, a person’s will in a moment of extremity.

Energy proportional to what is being bound. Binding at the nuclear level requires sun-tier energy, which means the practitioner’s own body is the price at that level. Most Binders stop short of nuclear work for good reason. Chronic overuse produces catastrophic cellular damage that no other discipline can heal.

The Binding cannot bind what has no structure to begin with. Pure chaos resists it. Proximity to Cyl or any strong chaos-aligned presence weakens it measurably.

Disciplined, patient, often physically imposing. Craftsmen, architects, surgeons, armorsmiths, bodyguards of consequence. Binders of the first rank are found in the Construction guild, the Medicine guild, and the ceremonial guard of the wealthy houses.

Gravity. The force of mass, attraction, structure at cosmic scale.

White-leaning. Creates structure through mass and attraction.

Shifting the apparent weight of an object. Softening a fall. Making footfalls silent. Steadying an unstable platform. A Weight-user feels unusually stable, and objects near them tend not to tip.

Hurling objects without touching them by redirecting local gravity. Crushing an enemy to their knees. Walking on walls, ceilings, or water by reorienting personal gravity. Creating localized pockets of heavier or lighter space. Levitation.

Bending light paths. Creating micro-wells capable of compressing matter. Holding an enemy immobile under effective multiple-g pressure. At the extreme edge, inducing localized gravitational collapse, creating micro-singularities that consume what is fed to them.

The practitioner’s own mass is the anchor for everything they do. Every action produces a reaction that pulls on them. Sustained high-level Weight work can crush its own user. Weight-users are prone to skeletal damage, joint failure, and in the worst cases, a practitioner consumed by the well they created.

Grounded, deliberate, physically distinctive (often either very dense or uncannily light in presence). Found in Transit (especially the rail family’s engineering corps), Construction, Defense, and among duelists.

Electromagnetism. The force that governs light, electricity, magnetism, chemistry, and most of what humans call “energy.”

Middle of the Order side. The most versatile physical force.

A spark. A flicker of magnetism. Sensing metal nearby. Heating a cup of tea without fire. A Current-user’s hair tends to stand when they concentrate, and metal cutlery bends subtly in their presence.

Throwing lightning. Blinding flashes of light. Creating localized darkness by absorbing photons. Reading magnetic signatures of objects and places. Stopping a heart through induced arrhythmia. Blocking a radio signal or forging one.

District-scale electromagnetic pulse. Holograms of terrifying fidelity, indistinguishable from solid reality to most senses. Rewriting the chemistry of a room (inducing combustion, neutralizing poisons, causing organic matter to polymerize). Weaving full illusions that even other Current-users have difficulty penetrating. Controlled plasma.

Current is visible to other Current-users the way scent is visible to predators. Every use leaves an electromagnetic signature that a skilled adversary can read. Practitioners cannot fully hide what they do from their peers. Chronic overuse produces nerve damage and eventual loss of fine motor control.

Clever, quick, often showy. Found widely: Information guild, Entertainment guild, Defense, Medicine. Current is the most common practitioner affinity among commoners and the discipline most heavily represented in public academies.

Weak nuclear force. Responsible for radioactive decay; the force that transmutes one particle type into another.

Black-leaning. Creates through transformation, which is its defining action. Distinct from The Scatter (which does not exist as a separate discipline in the current canon; transformation is the Unmaking’s singular domain).

Shifting the isotope of a small object. Inducing faint radiation. Changing the dissolved salts in water to alter taste or mild toxicity. Accelerating or slowing the decay of unstable materials. An Unmaker leaves objects subtly changed wherever they have spent time.

Induced tumors or targeted radiation sickness in a specific person. Transmuting small amounts of material (silver to lead, which is a major crime in the coin-minting economy). Altering the aging of an object or being by accelerating or decelerating specific decay pathways.

Full alchemical transmutation of matter. Bioweapons crafted atom by atom. Diseases engineered by literally rewriting the molecular identity of pathogens. In legend, the creation of elements not found in nature, with properties no scientist can describe.

Every transmutation demands a sacrifice paid by the wielder’s own body. Cells age. DNA frays. The Unmaker often harbors cancers they redirected but could not fully outrun. Old Unmakers are unmistakable: pocked, fragile, hollow-eyed, frequently in ongoing pain. They are also the most respected practitioners of their generation, because no one else survives the craft.

Isolated, introspective, ethically weighted. Found in Medicine (the healers who can cure by transmutation), Defense (feared weapons specialists), and the shadow economies that value alchemical currency. Often monastic or semi-reclusive.

The life of reality. Emergent, generative, non-reducible to the fundamental forces. Colors are drawn from the subtractive (pigment-based) palette and sum to black. Green for Growing, red for Heart, magenta for Knowing, indigo for Dream. Chaos practice stains rather than glows.

Important distinction: Chaos is not “disorder.” Chaos is creative unpredictability, the capacity for genuine novelty. Life, art, love, revolution, prophecy. What cannot be derived from physics alone.

Life itself. Biology as a self-organizing phenomenon. Autopoiesis, the drive of living systems to persist and complexify.

Black-leaning in the original framework (chaos as life), but operationally the most “constructive” of the Chaos currents.

Accelerating the healing of small wounds. Coaxing plants to grow. Calming a frightened animal. Extending the freshness of food. A Grower leaves subtle abundance in their wake; cut flowers last longer in rooms they sit in.

Regrowing lost limbs over weeks. Curing diseases by directing the body’s own systems. Warping flora and fauna into new forms. Inducing fertility or barrenness in people, fields, herds. Accelerating or slowing biological time in a contained system.

Creating new species. Extending human life far beyond natural limits. Raising the dying from the edge of death, though not from true death. Shaping a forest overnight. At the extreme edge, weaving living architecture, a building grown rather than built, responsive to the needs of those within.

The Growing takes from the practitioner’s own vitality. Great Growers age strangely, some looking preternaturally young while feeling elderly inside, others weathered far beyond their years. The deepest practitioners eventually pour their lives into whatever they last healed, their vitality transferred entirely to another vessel. Healers of the highest rank are often explicitly mortal bargains, giving their years for a patient’s.

Nurturing, patient, often tied to specific living communities. Found in Medicine, Food (agriculture), and religious orders. Also in the shadow markets where black-market healing is sold for high prices.

Cognition, reason, memory. The emergent phenomenon of mind as it arises from the organized activity of brains. Pattern recognition, meaning-making, understanding.

Whitest of the Chaos currents, because cognition imposes pattern and structure on experience. Some theorists classify The Knowing as a bridge-discipline between Order and Chaos.

Perfect recall of what one has seen or read. Rapid pattern recognition, especially of social cues. An unerring sense of direction. A Knowing-user remembers small details that others forget, and they are never lost.

Reading the history of an object from its surface. Inheriting an expertise by carefully watching it practiced. Extracting truth from a lie by detecting the structure of deception. Reconstructing a destroyed document from the imprint it left on readers’ minds.

Momentary omniscience within a specific domain (the layout of a city, the inner workings of an organization, a dead language). The ability to rebuild a burned library from the cumulative memory of everyone who read the books. Knowing in advance what a person will say before they have chosen the words.

Every act of Knowing costs memory. Not the memory of what was learned, but memory of what was loved. The wielder’s past erodes to make room for what they know. Ancient Knowers are walking libraries who cannot remember their own mothers. Some carry notebooks of instructions from their younger selves, reminding them of who they were and what they cared about.

Contemplative, sometimes cold, often respected and feared in equal measure. Found in Information, Law, Research, and the upper reaches of the religions. A rare Knowing-adept becomes the confidant of a guild head, trusted for perfect discretion because they have lost their capacity for personal attachment.

A specific Knowing discipline lineage worth naming on its own. Thoughtplayers are Knowing practitioners whose craft is the sharing and shaping of perception itself across minds. The folk register calls them “thoughtplayer witches,” a phrase that carries centuries of mistrust in the rural provinces and is considered impolite in Sulamir noble company.

What thoughtplayers do.

  • Lend senses. A thoughtplayer can take what one mind sees, hears, or feels and overlay it, in real time, onto another mind. Recipients experience their own perception and the lent perception simultaneously as a superposition that requires concentration to hold clearly. A tactical application is to give a party of fighters the sight of one witness who can see what the rest cannot.
  • Link minds. A thoughtplayer can weave multiple minds into a shared perceptual field, each member of the field experiencing the pooled senses of the others. In deep practice this becomes a single multi-minded observer. This is dangerous: prolonged linking erodes the boundary between the participants’ identities in ways that do not fully reverse.
  • Ride attention. A thoughtplayer can attach to another person’s attention and experience what that person is perceiving, without the target being aware. This is the thoughtplayer application most feared in folk register, and the application most commonly associated with the word “witch.”
  • Project memory. A thoughtplayer can plant a remembered perception into another mind so completely that the recipient cannot distinguish it from their own recollection. This is a rarely taught technique, because the cost-in-memory on the thoughtplayer is steep and the ethical weight is heavy.

Cost specific to thoughtplayers. The ordinary Knowing cost (erosion of memory of what is loved) is paid at a higher rate by thoughtplayers, because the discipline involves carrying pieces of other minds through one’s own. Ancient thoughtplayers often cannot remember which of their memories are theirs. Deliberate note-keeping, letters from younger selves, and trained mnemonic rituals are part of the discipline’s survival craft.

Social status. Thoughtplayers have been hunted in most provinces within the last few generations. The formal academies do not advertise thoughtplayer training; the lineages survive privately, usually matrilineal, taught mother to daughter in careful secrecy. Public discovery of a thoughtplayer in a noble house can destabilize the house; in a common house, it can end a life. See 03-ARCHONS.md section 3 for Cyl’s mother, a thoughtplayer witch killed by her own father for the practice, and for Cyl’s inherited training.

Plot weight. The thoughtplayer specialization is the mechanism by which Cyl can share Oen’s Order-sight of invisible creatures into an ordinary party’s perception. See 13-SCENES.md section 1 for the scene canon. Any other character in the series who turns out to be a thoughtplayer is, by definition, someone whose life has been shaped by hiding.

Emotion, will, passion, bond. The felt dimension of consciousness. The motive force of human action.

Black-leaning. Emotions are volatile, shifting, chaotic. The Heart is the most personal of the currents and the most dangerous in a crowd.

Sensing and subtly shaping moods in a room. Unnatural charisma. The ability to make oneself loved or feared on contact. A Heart-user leaves rooms warmer or cooler than they entered.

Inducing specific emotions in specific people. Binding someone to a cause or a person through forged resonance. Hardening one’s own resolve past superhuman limits (walking through fire because one refuses to burn). Feeling what another feels as a tool of manipulation or compassion.

Turning crowds into armies of shared feeling. Breaking a person by tearing out what they love. Speaking an oath that physically cannot be broken while the Heart-user remains true. Walking unharmed through what should kill because one refuses to die. Inducing mass grief or mass joy at a civic scale.

Every act of the Heart costs emotional range. The wielder’s own feelings flatten and narrow. Great Heart-adepts often cannot feel anything authentic anymore and must manufacture the emotions they use as tools. The most powerful are often the loneliest people alive, loved by millions but unable to love anyone back. Many high Heart practitioners cultivate a single bond they refuse to use the Heart on, as the last place where they remain themselves.

Magnetic, dangerous, often morally fraught. Found in Religion, Entertainment, Defense (as commanders), and Politics. Charismatic leaders who do not realize they are practicing the Heart produce movements that outsize their conscious intent.

The unconscious, the symbolic, the archetypal, the mythic. The layer of human consciousness where individual identity dissolves into the collective substrate of meaning. The observer-effect boundary in the physics-analog, where minds and reality overlap.

Off-axis. The deepest Chaos current but also the one that touches the edges of the forbidden Hollow. The Dream is the safe, human-mediated version of what the Hollow is in its raw form.

Vivid precognitive dreams. Omens that prove accurate. A knack for interpreting symbols and meanings. A Dream-user has recurring dreams that seem to be trying to tell them something, and they are usually right.

Walking in others’ dreams, uninvited or by consent. Pulling memories from a sleeping mind. Seeding ideas in a population through shared dream imagery. Prophetic sight that speaks in metaphor rather than data. Conversations with the dead, which may or may not be real.

Shaping events in waking life through ritual performed in dream. Becoming a living myth that others feel the gravity of without knowing why. Opening the door between dream and waking so that what was only symbol becomes physically present: a nightmare that walks, a beloved figure returned from death, a city that dreamed itself into a different shape overnight.

The Dream costs selfhood. Dreamwalkers lose the ability to fully distinguish their own story from the stories of others. They become mythic rather than personal. Late in their practice they may speak in voices that are not their own, remember events that never happened to them but happened to the species. Eventually a true dreamwalker stops being a person and becomes a figure that people see.

The Dream borders the Hollow. An overconfident or overly ambitious dreamwalker can fall through. The dreamwalker traditions are careful, conservative, and heavily ritualized for exactly this reason.

Reclusive, mystical, frequently within religious orders or as independent seers. Often young (the gift manifests in childhood) but short-lived in the world (either they retire young into dreams or they cross over into the Hollow). Highly respected, deeply feared.

The direct exercise of the faith-substrate itself, unfiltered by any channel-shape. Where the other nine practices bend faith into specific forms for specific effects, unshaped Faith sends the substrate outward along a single line, from the practitioner to a target, undiluted by technique. This is the practice of saints, priests, mystics, and the devout of every station. In the old registers this was called simply “the Faith,” and the simplified usage persists in everyday speech.

Bridging. Unshaped Faith can be directed toward Order-aligned entities (angels, the Source) or Chaos-aligned entities (demons, the Companion) or across the spectrum (other humans, ideals, oneself). The alignment of the effect is determined by the target, not by the practice itself. A devotee of an angel strengthens that angel; a devotee of a demon strengthens that demon; a devotee of a human makes that human literally more real.

The small magic of prayer. A sincerely faithful person heals slightly faster, takes blows that should kill, finds what they need, senses when an angel or demon is nearby. The stuff of saints and lay mystics. Most lay practitioners of this tier do not know they are practicing.

Structured devotion. A sustained relationship with a specific entity produces real effects. A faithful priest of an angel channels a fraction of that angel’s binding power. A faithful follower of a charismatic leader lends their leader literal extra reality, making them stronger, harder to kill, more compelling. This is where the religions actually function as metaphysical institutions.

Covenant. A complete pact between mortal and cosmological entity in which the mortal becomes a vessel and the entity becomes manifest through them. The mortal gains tremendous power. The mortal also begins to become the entity. Saints do not live happy private lives. They are slowly absorbed into what they have devoted themselves to.

Unshaped Faith does not cost the practitioner’s body the way Order channels do, nor erode interior life the way Chaos channels do. It transfers the practitioner outward. Pieces of the self flow through the bridge into the target, where they accumulate and make the target more real, more present, more able. The entity grows more real; the practitioner grows less their own. At the highest expression, the practitioner becomes a node in something larger than themselves.

The Target Determines the Effect. Faith in an angel strengthens that angel. Faith in a demon strengthens that demon. Faith in the Source or Companion reaches them across impossible distance and may, a little, begin to wake them. Faith in a person makes that person literally more. A demagogue who attracts genuine mass faith becomes a small angel or demon themselves. Faith in an ideal makes the ideal present in the world in ways it otherwise would not be. Faith in oneself builds a closed loop of astonishing strength and profound narcissism.

Incorrect belief still works. Sincere Faith produces real effects even when the target of the belief is inaccurately described or does not exist. See the Framework section above. The practical consequence is that multiple contradictory religions can all produce genuine miracles, because their devotees’ faith lands where the shape of their belief points, not where the theology claims. A priest who prays to a fictitious god may be unknowingly feeding a real entity whose archetype their fictitious god resembles, or slowly reifying the fictitious god across generations as a new small entity, or leaking faith into the Hollow, which is always listening for unclaimed substrate.

Forbidden Direction. Faith in the Hollow widens the Wound directly. Hollow cults use this mechanism. This is why they are executed without trial.

Clergy, saints, prophets, cult leaders, and the devout of every station. Found primarily in religious institutions, but also in the innermost circles of the wealthy houses (which have their own private devotions) and among the mystical undercurrents of every guild. A charismatic politician or beloved monarch is, knowingly or not, often a Faith-receiver rather than a Faith-practitioner.

Unshaped Faith is the reason the religions matter metaphysically, not just socially. The eighteen guilds, the wealthy houses, and the cynical priesthoods depend on the populace’s faith for their legitimacy and for their actual power. A guild with millions of believing subjects is literally more real. A guild whose people have lost faith is brittle in a way that cannot be hidden. Faith-monitoring and faith-cultivation are massive institutional concerns, and propaganda is a real metaphysical weapon rather than a figurative one. Because the substrate of every channel-discipline is also faith, a house whose population has lost faith in its legitimacy loses not just compliance but the ambient substrate its practitioners draw on to work their channels. Faith bleeds are civilizational emergencies.

A stone running unshaped Faith goes gold. Saints’ stones are famously golden. A priest in covenant with an angel may find their stone fixed gold even when they are not consciously praying, because the bridge is always open.

Standing works: unshaped Faith fixed by the Binding

Section titled “Standing works: unshaped Faith fixed by the Binding”

Unshaped Faith is a bridge, and a bridge can be held open and then anchored. When a practitioner at the Covenant tier pours self into a target long enough, the target becomes so real it cannot easily un-be; and if a Binder then fixes that hyper-real substrate into a single form (the Binding can bind light, section 1), the result is a standing work: a self-sustaining miracle that needs no maintenance, burns gold rather than a channel’s color because the light is the poured self, and cannot be undone in the ordinary way. It cannot be extinguished, only removed, because a bound thing is conserved and relocated, never unmade. Standing works are rare, because they require a single practitioner or covenant-line fluent in both unshaped Faith and the Binding, which section K notes is an uncommon dual practice at the priestly tier.

The cost is not escaped, only deferred. What the practitioner pours out is lent, held in the work, and by the nature of the highest tier (where the practitioner is slowly absorbed into what they serve) it will one day be called back to its source. A standing work is a loan of self made visible, and it carries, whether or not any reader knows to look, the promise of its own reclaiming.

Substrate answers substrate. A standing work of unshaped Faith responds to unshaped faith, not to channeled technique and not to a faithless hand. It can be woken, carried, or received by someone reaching for it in sincere unshaped faith, including an unidentified lay practitioner who has no name for what they are doing, and it resists greed, spite, and the closed loop of self-faith, which are the wrong shape of the same substrate. Like reaches like across the bridge. This is why the small miracles of the devout so often pass through the hands of the poor, the desperate, and the young, who believe in a thing with their whole undivided selves and are not practicing anything they could name.

The primal Wound between the Source and the Companion. The absence of relation itself, made accessible as a channel. The quantum-indeterminate, observer-affected, probabilistic layer where reality is not fully integrated. The Hollow is not a shape of relation, and therefore not a shape of any archetype; it is the channel along which faith runs when it is routed through the Wound rather than through any cosmological pattern.

Not on the spectrum. Outside the Order-Chaos axis entirely. The Hollow is a tear in reality, not a principle of it. It is the one channel whose practice widens what every other channel’s practice implicitly rests on.

Coincidences that lean toward the user. Knowing things they should not. Brief invisibility in the seams of perception. Minor luck and minor misfortune weaving around the user in patterns. A low-tier Hollow-user often looks like a strangely lucky person with a strangely dark shadow.

Stepping sideways through solid matter by exploiting the probabilistic gap between particles. Unmaking a moment so it never happened (but remembered by the user alone). Summoning minor entities from beyond the veil. Perceiving the thoughts of any mind within line of sight.

Opening a door that should stay closed. Summoning kaiju or cosmic-horror entities directly. Rewriting the probability of large-scale events. Inducing reality to forget a person, a place, or a fact. At the extreme edge, creating a new tear in the world that outlives the practitioner.

The Hollow is the one channel whose cost is not paid by the practitioner. Every other channel routes faith through a relational archetype (an angel, a demon, an emergent current, a target of devotion), and the practitioner’s self pays out in some currency as the faith runs through them. The Hollow has no relational landing, because the Hollow is the place where relation has failed. Faith routed through the Hollow therefore does not pay back against the practitioner. It pours into the Wound, which widens to absorb what it receives. The cost is paid by reality itself, by everyone else. A Hollow-user can practice for decades and feel fine while the world around them grows subtly worse: kaiju incidents rise, pair-bonds fail, weather turns wrong. Eventually the cost catches up, often in the form of what the Hollow sends through the door the practitioner has been opening.

The Hollow also receives unclaimed substrate from elsewhere in the faith-economy. Mis-targeted faith that lands nowhere else (a prayer to a god that does not exist, a vow sworn on an ideal no one upholds, a worship directed at a figure who dissolves) has a small chance of pooling in the Hollow, feeding it without any conscious Hollow-user’s participation. This is the slow metaphysical consequence of bad theology at civilizational scale.

Everything the Hollow touches, touches back. Long-term practitioners do not retire. They go away, and something else comes back wearing their face.

  • The cost is externalized, which makes it the most antisocial practice by construction.
  • It erodes the very substrate of reality.
  • It is the direct channel for cosmic horror and kaiju to enter the world.
  • Even well-intentioned Hollow practice accelerates the Wound.
  • It passively drinks the faith-leakage of every failed theology in the civilization.

Every civilized province outlaws the Hollow. A specific OCTA tracks and executes practitioners and hunts Hollow cults. The religions coordinate with this order. Most known Hollow-users are dead within a year of being identified.

Isolated, desperate, or deeply corrupted. Most come to the Hollow by Faith-in-Hollow cult pathways or by accident, often through the Dream bordering too closely on the Wound. Very rarely, a Hollow-user has genuinely noble intent and believes they can use the forbidden channel for good. They are wrong, but their stories are the most tragic.

A stone running the Hollow goes voided. Not black (black is reserved for the archon of Chaos practicing all four Chaos currents at once). Not clear. Absent. The stone’s presence in the visual field becomes a hole, a light-swallowing negative. This is the most visually unmistakable marker in the whole discipline set and makes live Hollow practice instantly identifiable to anyone trained to watch for it. Readers are drilled to recognize a voided stone at distance.

  1. The full list of eighteen guilds and their channel-alignments, if any.
  2. The status of minor practices not listed here that may actually be sub-applications of the nine channels (some theorists argue time-manipulation is a high combination of The Weight and The Knowing; others believe it is its own channel).
  3. How the academies identify the native shape of a student’s faith at what age, and what tests are used.
  4. The question of whether a channel-shape can be deliberately re-taught to an adult practitioner, shifting their native shape by immersion.
  5. The origin of focus stones. Possibilities include ancient angel-demon crafting, natural formation in specific geological conditions, both, or something stranger.
  6. The question of what happens to completely unclaimed faith at civilizational scale. Working answer: most pools into the Hollow or accretes into small nascent entities, but the mechanics deserve specification when a plot requires it.
  7. The question of whether sustained mass belief can create a new god from nothing. Working assumption: yes, slowly, over generations. Cult leaders who last this long are exceedingly rare.
  8. The question of what distinguishes a person channeling unshaped Faith in themselves from a demagogue being fed by others’ Faith. Both produce similar effects from the outside.
  9. The question of whether the OCTA can detect the difference between a well-intentioned devotee of a fictitious god and a covert Hollow cultist whose faith is being drained by the Wound.
